Green – The term “green” means to be environmentally friendly. Going Green means making the conscious choice to value the connectedness that we have with the environment. By understanding our daily actions and taking steps to make positive impact on our planet, we become better global citizens and Earth stewards. Air Purification – The air we breathe is known to be polluted with the vapors and chemicals from our cars and factories, so air purification devices have been created to help make our living, learning and building spaces healthier to breathe in. These come in the form of filters for HVAC ducts and air coolers that suck and blow air through filters to cleanse the air in the area it is in. It removes most lint, dust, bacteria and dirt in the air. Bio Based Products –Bio based products are products used (non-food, non-feed), that are created wholly or partially from renewable agricultural substances, such as plants, animals and marine life. They have no toxins that harm the environment and are reusable. Biodegradable – Everything on earth decomposes in one form or another, but some do so faster than others. When it comes to materials that are biodegradable, this means that within six months, the matter will decompose into water, organic matter or carbon dioxide. Carbon Footprint – There are different terms for how the human race is effecting their environment and “leaving a carbon footprint” is one of them. This is a term used to explain how what we leave behind effects the earth. So if we are damaging the environment by using lots of energy and driving non-fuel efficient cars, then we are leaving a big carbon footprint.
Compost – Gardening is one of the top ways of living green today, so to help decaying matter is used to provide nutrients to plants. Things like dried leaves, food scraps and manure are used as compost and planted into the soil of plants. It helps to improve the structure of the soil and give more nutrients to the plants. Compostable Products – Compostable products would usually consist of organic decaying substances like dead leaves, fertilizer, food scraps and manure. Feeding plants natural waste is key in making them healthier and stronger. With compost, which is decaying food, plants can get the nutrients rotting food can provide to them for better growth. Deforestation – For a very long time, human kind has fought and argued about the idea of cutting down trees in the rain forests around the world. Deforestation is the act of cutting down trees for use in creating energy and paper. Since many animals live in these forests and the environment needs these trees to create oxygen, there is strong opposition to deforestation. Ecological – Like any other community, an ecology is a how a group of interdependent organisms live in an environment. So the when something is ecological, it’s talking about how human and the earth are able to survive amongst one another. Energy Conservation – Energy conservation means coming up with ways to use less energy; this can be done by cutting off power supply and lights that are not in use or by using solar, wind or running water power. It is important that power is conserved because although there is a large supply of it, burning a lot of energy will cause more harmful pollutants to be released into the air, destroying the o-zone layer and the environment. Energy Efficient –When you are energy is efficient, the supply is enough to allow you and others using it to survive. This is usually energy that is being created by you, so you are conserving energy and only using what you need, to help keep enough energy for your home. The energy is useful to you, the consumer, without being wasted and misused. Environment – The habitat in which organisms live an environment. The organisms interact in one way or another and all rely on each other in one way or another. When one is being harmed, it could have a negative effect on the environment. Environmentally Friendly – Finding ways of creating materials and substances that will have minimal effects on the environment. Products that are non-reusable are the biggest factor of making the world environmentally unfriendly, especially if they decompose very slowly. It has anything to do with reducing the amount of harm done to the earth and environment.
Green Cleaning – Cleaning up your household is always something that is recommended, but the use of a lot of chemicals and sprays that release toxic chemicals into the air should be avoided. There are green cleaning products available that are non-toxic and safe to use in your home; it is also safer to use around children and animals. Green Construction – Building homes is always a booming market, but not like green construction. These builders are looking for environmentally friendly ways to create houses and buildings while bring down the consumption of energy and reducing pollution. Green Living/Greening – Those that decide to live in a way that will either be neutral or beneficial to the environment living green. This can be done by using environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, cars and fuel. Those that live off the grid are also considered greening. Green Washing- People or products that promote their “green” status without proper credentialing or certification. Global Warming – With all the toxins being released into the air on a daily basis contributes to a term called global warming. This is when the atmosphere and oceans witness a rise in temperatures; this is due to the o-zone layer being destroyed, which allows the sun’s rays to beat down stronger. Global warming is thought to be the cause of the melting icebergs around the world and many fear the ocean will rise and other parts of the world will be affected by the rising temperatures. Hemp – Hemp is a plant known for having lots of fiber. It is often used to build rope, paper and even insulation and textiles for homes. It grows quickly– just takes four months of harvesting. It is even used in some gasoline; when this is done, no toxins are released into the air. Hemp is said to be a cheaper alternative for oil and gasoline. Most importantly, hemp is biodegradable. Humidification – When the air gets too dry, there needs to be humidity or moisture in the air to make it more comfortable. Trees and nearby bodies of water can help with this factor, along with rain. There are electronic devices called humidifiers that can be used for humidification in the living space. This releases air and uses water to mix into that air for an air moisturizing effect. Some people use these during the dry winter months and extremely cold winter months. Hybrid Cars – Cars are known to be one of the top problems for the environment because they release tons of toxins into the air daily from the gasoline that is used to fuel them. Now, there are new cars on the market that are created as a hybrid; this means they use both gasoline and electricity/battery power to run. The hybrid cars use both sources of energy, but the clean electric energy is used when driving at lower speeds. Natural Gas – Gas is known for being a primary polluter of the air we breathe, so there is an alternative available called natural gas. It is a fossil fuel that is used in its gaseous state for cooking and heating up homes. It is also said to be cleaner than regular fossil fuels used for gasoline.
Natural Health – It is an alternative to modern medicine. The concept of eating organic foods and living healthily is one of the key concepts of natural health. Instead of depending on science and technology, natural health deals with natural whole foods, organic foods and other natural nutrition. Non-toxic –Food and products that don’t contain harmful substances that will not affect the earth, humans or the environment are considered as non-toxic. Off the Grid – Most of the human race receives their power from an energy company, but there are a select few who decide to create and use their own energy – this is known as living off the grid. The grid is the power supply company. Some homeowners decide to install solar and wind power devices that help to create energy for their home; this can be done with solar panels, windmills and batteries for energy storage. Organic – Organic means to be untouched by science and chemicals, it is pure. Increasingly people are looking for pure natural substances and foods to consume because they are without pesticides and preservatives, which makes them healthier to eat. Passive Solar Lighting – For many years, fireplaces and heaters have been used to warm the home, but there is an equally effective alternative that uses less power. With a south facing window, there is a large amount of heat and energy stored in a room and can be used to heat a building. Recyclable – If a product cannot be reused, it is most likely able to be restored into a different format and used again. Plastic and metals are recyclable because they can be broken back down and created into something new for use. Retrofitting- The process of renovating buildings to make them more environmentally friendly by adding energy-efficient windows and lighting. This process is thought to be extremely effective in reducing carbon emissions because a large percentage of CO2 is emitted by buildings. Solar Power – The sun is known to produce enormous amount of energy, so to help put that to use, solar power is used. Panels designed to absorb the sunlight can store energy in batteries connected to them. For as long as the sun is up, the panels collect energy transferred to the batteries for clean energy use. Sustainable – When it comes to energy sufficiency, having sustainable energy is important. Sustainable means having something for a long period of time. So with power, it would mean that you’ll have enough energy to survive without worrying about running out of power for future generations. Wind Power – Kinetic energy is when power is created through movement. As wind blows, the kinetic energy is created, usually by the use of wind mills. Mils begin to turn like fans and energy is created and stored for energy efficiency.
