20 Ways to Conserve Energy Print

Green politics, like any other politics, has people on both sides of the debate looking to advance their views.  But for those who want to conserve our natural resources, the political is tied to the personal, and proponents of energy conservation work on a variety of levels to get green solutions implemented.  Here are some ways to make that happen at home and throughout the country.

In the Community

Keep up on the environmental platforms of elected officials – from municipal to federal, these individuals have a big impact on our national energy policy

Work with employers to minimize commuting and other fuel-hungry enterprise

Start a recycling program in a housing community, school or workplace to practice material source reduction

At Home

Switch to cold washing/line dry – downgrading your laundry temps and drying cuts a lot of energy from your monthly use

Maximize appliance efficiency – large installations like refrigerators can be energy hogs

Use ENERGY STAR products – these appliances are rated for best conservation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Winterize your home – using simple plastic sheeting over windows in the winter can save you a bundle on your heating bill and prevent your furnace from burning away half of each year.  Caulking and weather stripping also helps

Insulate walls and ceilings with sustainable fiber products

Use landscaping to your advantage – trees and other plants take CO2 out of the air

On the Road

Choose an energy efficient vehicle – select your ride based on number of passengers

Pump up tires – having tires properly inflated can save fuel use by several percentage points

Lighten the load – taking unnecessary articles out of a vehicle also promotes its fuel efficiency.

Use mass transit – though it may not be practical for many of us, others can find reliable solutions for getting places using the resources that cities and towns have set up to promote efficient mass transportation

These are just some of the things you can do to make your home, workplace and community a better place and anticipate the future, putting your green politics to work for the world you live in.
