How to Build a Wind Generator Print

Wind power is a new player in the general industry of creating electricity to run all of our various appliances.  But humans have been using the power of the wind for centuries.  Today, using wind power is a little more complicated: making a wind generator requires a lot of gear, time and patience.  Here’s how some independent wind power enthusiasts go about building their own modern ‘windmills’ to get renewable energy into a more diverse set of human hands.

Wind Power Gear

As an elusive alternative energy, wind power requires a lot of unique hardware.  To start with, you’ll need a tower installation, as well as a battery system, cabling, and a few more other necessary items.  Your setup will have to capture and regulate the energy that comes in.  You’ll also need some other specialized equipment to keep the installation in good condition through high winds.

Pre-Installation Design

To effectively harness wind power, a builder must get the lay of the land, finding a high spot without obstacles and figuring out how the wind generally flows across a specific space.  These calculations are used when setting up the direction and placement of the installation.

More Design Necessities

An alternative energy builder working on wind power has to work with a selected model of generator and rotor setup, as well as a battery bank for storing the power for distribution.  Specific parts of your generator should be chosen with the size and max power of the unit in mind; there are also several configurations for generators and rotors designed to catch the wind in different ways.

It’s also necessary to figure out how to transfer the power down with cabling, and to arrange for mobile systems to keep the machine out of harm’s way in the strongest winds.  Regulating hardware is a plus for getting the most out of a wind generator for ongoing renewable energy.

Setting up a wind power system can be a trial and error process, but in the end, successful builders will reap dividends in wind power for a greener future.
